But in Flint's minds eye, there was one thing. Him and the ship, working as one, in unison. The sounds of the bridge were there, but he felt every shimmy, every ounce of thrust, every microscopic grain of interstellar dust that impacted the shields. And he rode it.
Somewhere behind him, someone said something about acquiring more power. Subconsciously, he willed the engines onward. They were already running over the rated specifications, and briefly he flashed on the Ferengi two hundred and forty second rules of acquisition. More is good, all is better.
But even deeper within him, there was something else in Flint's soul. He knew that travelling quickly, of course, is nothing. Any idiot could point a ship in a set direction and hang on. The human mind just wasn't supposed to understand the sensation of faster than light travel. So they created the warp scale to solidify it into something it could. And even the sublight speeds they were currently travelling at were just as incomprehensible. It was just at this speed, you had half a chance of seeing what you ran into before you died.
Every ship had her foibles too. Yeager's, he didn't know if other members of the senior staff had experienced it, was a naughty period. Somewhere between warp 2.34 and 2.35 she tries to shake your teeth out in his opinion. But here, maxing out the impulse drive and beyond was almost bliss; Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth. And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings...
