There was a part of Aeryn that wanted to leave, to get away from what was fast becoming one of the worst moments of her life. Yet something deep inside the redhead knew that was the wrong thing to do, even before Beka responded to her outburst. Was she the worst girlfriend ever? Taking more than she gave? It certainly seemed that way as Beka bit back, telling her everything that she had done wrong, and how she hadn't shown her this side until now. This wasn't fair, and Aeryn knew it; she had never asked Beka to make the first move or even thought it had been possible for her to date again, never mind fall in love with someone.
" How dare you say all of that? That's not fair, Beka, and you know it. I didn't think I had this in me, or maybe it was just always underneath the surface. I did make an effort, so don't accuse me of not doing anything. I gave you my everything, but now I'm realising that no matter how much I gave, it was never going to be good enough for you, was it?"
The more Beka pointed out her apparent flaws, the more Aeryn felt like she had been a complete failure, for not seeing the signs sooner that her supposedly loving relationship was nothing but a charade. " No matter what I say, it's not going to help Beka, regardless of how I saw you, how much I cared and loved you, guess I was just caught up in what was so new and wonderful, that you were the only person that mattered".
Aeryn had a feeling that Beka wouldn't believe her, and she was trying her hardest not to break down, especially as Beka continued throwing ammunition at her, pure venom, highlighting the scientist's other wrongdoings. " And I gave it Beka, it's not my fault that work got in the way and we barely saw each other as it was, so don't be putting all the blame on me".
Then came something that made Aeryn's heart break once and for all, and she just stared at Beka, taking a minute to process how cruel she could be when she wasn't the only one who was hurting right now. " Why would you say that? I never lost interest, Beka, not once, and no, I'm not about to jump into bed with anyone else … but I'm realising now that this was never supposed to work, and …".
Aeryn stopped as Beka broke down, and instinct was telling her to go comfort the doctor, but it was the wrong thing to do. " Beka, please," she implored, feeling the first tears start to fall. " I loved you, I really did, you gave me hope when I didn't have any, and for what it's worth, I'm sorry that we weren't meant to be".
