The comm link connected, revealing a silver skinned Riani on the Aquila’s viewscreen. Their eyes were a pair of telescopic implants with pupils that rotatated as they shifted focus. The surroundings were dark, illuminated only by the distinctive blue glow of a warp engine. Those with engineering experience would estimate that at least a dozen people would be required to operate this type of lab effectively, but this person appeared to be alone. They leaned close to the communicator, speaking quietly.
“Good evening, Captain. My name is Luraim. I don’t have much time, and I’m sure this is considered treason, but my emergency is Riani’s emergency. Do you know why Riani has so many nations, but only Tanndi has developed a warp engine? Dilithium is abundant all over the planet, but it’s tainted by a volatile compound only found on this planet. My team discovered a way to purify the dilithium sufficient to power a small warp engine, but a byproduct of the process is concentrated rianite. Even a small amount could be used as part of a devastating weapon. I’m sure I don’t need to explain why the Tanndi government has employed every means necessary to prevent other nations from arriving at this technology.”
The scientist looked over their shoulder, visibly concerned.
“I became a scientist to bring my people out of this dark age, but this imbalance has only made things worse. Now that I’ve had a look at the warp engine from your shuttle, I know that the Federation’s reputation as the greatest scientists in the galaxy is well earned. There must be something you can do to make it safe for us to share our technology with all Riani.”
Daniel listened to the scientist carefully and said, "Luraim, you bring me many concerns as yes it would be great if we could help you all in this issue with dilithium but as you pointed out this could cause massive conflict in some of the other areas of your planet and it is something we can not see happen." he paused for a moment.
"Ideally your planet and governments would all have to come to the table as a unified government for us to even consider helping you in what you are asking. Let me have a think, we will be in contact."
He noticed as he said this another officer arriving not far away to talk to him.
[Commander Velaul to Captain Brooks — I have some updates for you.]
Brooks then looked at the view screen, "Sorry I need to take this, I'm going to put you on hold for a moment Luriam." he motioned to the comms officer to cut the viewscreen along with the audio.
"Captain Brooks to Commander Velaul, go ahead number one."
[I have reason to believe the shuttle was not shot down in an offensive move against the Federation. It was a defensive reaction — likely against an unknown shuttle that failed to communicate its intent. Her tone held cautious conviction — the theory made sense, but they still needed hard evidence. [Ambassador Saida Gebrezghi is alive and currently being treated by doctors in a detention center near the Tanndi industrial district.]
Then came the coded message, wrapped in an old Earth reference no one on this planet was likely to catch:
[I’ve got a feeling that to root out the real problem, we’re going to have to take it to the mattresses. That should lead us to the heart of the breakdown… or wherever the comms blockage began.]
"Yes, well we are having a request here from a scientist on the planet to help them clear up containment dilithium and as we know this isn't a one government world. I'm not convinced in giving anyone power over another. Keep on investigating and keep us informed. Any sniff of danger I want you to beam everyone out and we will work this another way. Brooks out."
He closed the channel.
At that, Samira looked over to Captain Brooks. "Captain, why wouldn't we help them? Our science people can figure out a way to filter and even nullify the Rianite. Make it less dangerous, especially for use." She lowered her voice then added, "but it depends if it's a good idea or not, especially with the Prime Directive involved."
Captain Brooks looked in Samira direction, "Sometimes things aren't as simple as they first appear." he replied.
Comms bring back the Scientist.
"Luraim, this is Captain Brooks, I know you have the best intentions but we have other priorities if you would like to come to the ship we can maybe discuss this further? " he asked.
