“Yeah, it’s that alright,” Mara replied. “Who the hell wants to bring back Vorta? Gives me so many questions I ain’t got answers to. Main one for me. Did these Klingons stumble onto some kinda… I don’t know, some kinda time capsule with Dominion War era cloning facilities and these guys ready to go? Or is this an actual example of the Dominion pushin’ back in? ‘Cause the first one don’t worry me that much. Klingons we can beat. I just did. But Dominion comin’ in with Jem’Hadar and Founders and all that? That is scary.”
Robin nodded as Mara shrugged. She didn't have any better answers, and the Security Chief's guess was as good as anything. They just didn't have any real information, and this situation just kept getting stranger and stranger.
“Always reckoned I could take a Jem’Hadar one on one. But you never get those fuckers one on one. You get a ship full o’ them. And that’s not a fight I ever wanna get into. Anyway. By the sounds of that, I need to let you get crackin’. There’s gonna be more questions ‘bout what we’re dealin’ with. Gonna bet you the Cap’n has better theories than time capsule. Plus I better go see if we got anythin’ else to fight yet. I got a horrible feelin’ I’m not done with the killin’ yet today.”
The nurse grimaced. "Nope. You're probably right. The Klingons aren't likely to volunteer anything. And God help us if the Dominion is involved." Their next encounter was likely to be every bit as bloody. The CMO gave her friend a wave as she headed off into the next room. She looked at the information, the patterns of genetics, as if staring a hole in the monitor would somehow magically solve the mystery.
A few moments later Robin heard something that gave her pause, coming from the doctor's lounge. Mara's voice.
"Give us the room please. That wasn’t a request." Her voice was firm, but the next sentence had an edge to it. "Out. All of you. Except you. You sit the fuck down."
What? What is she doing in the lounge?
She stood up and headed that way, her enhanced hearing picking out Beka's voice also coming from the same room.
"I don’t really feel like…"
"I don’t care" Calleja snarled. “We’re gonna sit and we’re gonna talk this out. And if there’s anyone else still in this room in the next 5 seconds, I’m gonna start collectin’ kneecaps."
Did she just tell my staff to get out like this is a wild west saloon and she's a sheriff?
Her staff started heading out, very quickly. Doctor Miller was the last to leave and the lounge door slid closed behind her, muting the sound of the two even to Robin's enhanced hearing... unless she went over there and stuck her ear to the door, something she wasn't about to do. "Commander Mayfair?" The young doctor looked uncharacteristically worried.
The CMO gave her a reassuring look, resolve in her gemstone eyes. It was difficult to suppress her anger. "I'll handle this, doctor. You head back to the lab."
It took several minutes, and some of the staff was still milling about. She was about to give them something to do when the door slid and Mara exited. There was no sign of blood (which would have been Beka's, not her own) on her, and her uniform wasn't even rumpled. Good. Maybe the two of them had resolved something. She intended to ask Beka about it later, because her friend had barely talked about her experiences since returning to the ship and certainly nothing about her cold loathing of Calleja. That needed to change. But it was a matter for later.
"Lieutenant Calleja? My office. That isn't a request." Her voice was all business. The nurse turned without seeing if the Security Chief would actually follow, heading for the CMO office. After the Chief had entered Robin looked at her for a moment.
"I hope you and Dr. Sydesh have resolved at least some of your differences. But understand this: you will not ever threaten or intimidate anyone on my staff ever again. Do you understand me, Lieutenant? This isn't your department and those doctors had every right to be there. They also have every right not to worry that the Chief of Security was going to harm them... and it doesn't matter one bit if you were joking. You will treat my staff with respect."
Robin was fully aware of the size difference between the two of them. Calleja had a foot of size and a hundred pounds of weight on her, all of it muscle, and could snap the tiny and rather frail CMO like a twig. It was like a chipmunk standing up to a bear. She'd seen Mara barely able to control herself in the past (even being close to taking a swing at the former First Officer) and she was clearly used to intimidating people. But Robin wasn't going to tolerate it, not in her sickbay. Those people were her responsibility, and she took that seriously. If that meant pissing off the Amazonian CoS, then so be it.
