Her team all had valuable insights about how Her team had all contributed valuable insights on how to proceed—and just as importantly, what to avoid. Even her Second Officer, who had remained silent throughout, had offered something in his own way. As Beno described it, his quiet observations might reveal details she was too close to see. Every angle of this situation needed to be handled with care. However it ended, there would be blowback of some kind.
When the General returned, Beno greeted him again with a warm, practiced smile.
“I believe meeting the President is a strong move,” she said. “Since it’s long been customary to meet at the Church, we should stick to that. Any deviation from an established routine could hurt us. People might start to think we’re manipulating the process behind the scenes. She had considered a few ways to help preserve appearances.
“There’s one thing I’d like to suggest,” she continued. “She should arrive at least twenty minutes after we do. If she sends an assistant ahead to say she’s running late, that positions her as the one in control. Anyone observing will see it as happening on her schedule—which gives her the upper hand, symbolically. That could be important for the negotiations later. If it goes the other way... we risk having that door closed for good.”
She paused, letting the weight of her words settle.
“We also know that since we arrived, all eyes have been on us. Ironically, the factions working against each other have given us a kind of shield—an extra layer of security.”
Sharing that information was a deliberate move—an offering of trust and respect.
“One last thing, General,” Beno said, placing her drink down and standing up straight. “It’s customary for one soldier to show respect to another like this.” She delivered a sharp, respectful salute. “Stay safe out there.”
Now, they had to get to the Church. That meeting would define everything that followed.
