Amila’s simple nod of acceptance, her eyes revealing more than her words, sent a wave of quiet relief through Ameen. He offered her a small, genuine smile in return, one that was just for her, not for the Commander of the ship.
"Good," he said, his voice low. He gave a slight gesture towards the bar. "After you, Lieutenant."
They walked the few steps to the bar together, a small, private bubble in the slowly filling lounge. The Bolian bartender, Moxi, gave them a professional smile.
"Commander. Lieutenant," she greeted them.
"I'll have a Saurian Brandy, neat," Ameen ordered, then turned to Amila. "What can I get for you?"
While Moxi prepared the drinks, Ameen leaned just a fraction closer to Amila, his voice a quiet murmur meant only for her. "Seriously, Amila, you and your team... you did an amazing job with this place. It looks incredible." He paused, his gaze softening a bit. "This is... a little strange, isn't it? Trying to act like just the CO and CSO at a formal dinner after... everything."
It is torture...
He waited for her response, the low thrum of the background music and the quiet chatter of the other arriving officers feeling a world away for that one brief moment.
