"We need to know what's going on down there and while I greatly appreciate our ability to neutralize threats, this needs to be methodical and surgical because we may only get one chance to figure out what's going on down there. Make sure your team is capable of handling anything that comes y'all's way but I want every department represented; we unfortunately can't shoot our way to figuring out why they're cloning who they're cloning," the Captain replied, having considered her response. "I trust you to handle it as delicately as possible."
Mara nodded, taking a moment or two to consider her reply.
Two away teams in a day. That’s… That’s quite the show of faith! I’m gonna be outranked but leadin’. Boss lady got way more belief in my tact than I do, that’s for sure. But I can do this. I know I can. And I even know who I can call on to make my odds better, now I’ve gotten to know people outside Security.
"Any concerns?" Tyra asked, coming back around to her Chief of Security and giving Calleja a knowing look.
“Nah, I’m good for once,” Mara replied. “I’ll get the job done. Aim will be to go in quiet as possible and get out without them knowing we were there. But if that’s not how it goes down, I’ll bring everyone back. Can’t promise there won’t be a few more Klingons in the morgue if they try anythin’ though,” she added with a wry smile. “I’ll get the team together and wait for the go-ahead.”
First choice is easy.
Looking over at Aeryn, Mara caught the CSO’s attention.
“Aer… Commander Miller. I need a 2IC, and one that can handle a rifle. Well volunteered,” she said with a feral grin. “Can you bring another science officer with you please? I’ll get the armoury to kit everyone out. Meet you in the shuttle bay as soon as I’ve geared up.”
Dark eyes moved over to the red-headed helmswoman.
“You too Midshipman,” Calleja said. “You got this, and I got you. Go get us a type 14 warmed up and I’ll see you down there,” she added with a nod that she intended to be reassuring.
With that, she made her exit, boarding the turbolift and heading back down to Security. She managed to wait until the doors closed and she was on the way before letting out the breath she’d been holding.
So this is what it feels like to be a senior officer. Fuckin’ hell. It was so much easier bein’ a line officer and just makin’ the best of the orders I got. And now here I am callin’ shots.
She laughed out loud and shook her head, almost in disbelief. She felt like she’d come so far in such a relatively short period of time, that she had to make sure to keep herself grounded.
Better I do it myself than the Cap’n does, or the Klingons.
