Chencko stopped reading the specifications of the device, fully focused on Cindy. He was impressed.
[Is that all? If you’re really such a talented gear head, you could probably make some money here on Riani. Let me know if you ever consider a change of career. For now, I’ll leave you to your work. I’ll be available if anything comes up — preferably at a more reasonable hour.]
The comm link disconnected, leaving the medical team to the work ahead.

As Cindy’s analysis had revealed upon his arrival, the technology used to create Jonas’s implant would be considered cutting-edge within the Federation. Only an expert in cybernetics would be able to design something with comparable capabilities within the constraints of a sleek profile. Thankfully, the Aquila happened to have one such expert aboard. Cindy’s design managed to improve on some elements of the original, with only minor sacrifices in heat distribution and the lifespan of the power cell.
The surgery was arduous and time consuming. Each component of the original implant needed to be disconnected before the new implant could be installed. It was incredibly precise work. Finally, it was time to initialize the new device and wake the patient. After a moment of tense silence, the patient’s brain activity began to register on the sickbay console. With the help of the cortical stimulator, connections began to form between the patient’s hippocampus and the new cyberware.
“Federation technology,” Jonas rasped, his eyelids fluttering open for the first time. “It’s been 10 years since I’ve been on a ship like this.”
The ambassador's eyes widened. He shifted, but was too weak to sit up properly. “The Aquila crew — is everyone alright?”
