Jonas shook his head, still dazed.
“Whoever it was, they probably weren’t a particular fan of my work.” He shifted, rolling on his side to get a better look at Cindy. “There are some diehard isolationists on Riani, but I doubt they would have left the rest of the away team unscathed. President Khushku doesn’t trust me, but she wouldn’t try to have me killed.”
Jonas blinked hard. His hand went up to his temple, gently running his fingers over the new implant. The various monitors around the biobed beeped steadily.
“That leaves the Xha crime family. I’ve been trying to keep tabs on them, as they have close ties to defense research. They’re perfectly happy to drive Riani into global conflict, as long as they can profit from it. Someone likely decided that I was becoming a threat to their business.”
The ambassador went quiet for a moment, seemingly studying the details of the room.
“What did you mean by ‘our family’?” He asked finally, “You’ve seen this happen before?”
