Getting back to the main, large screen that Artie had set up, the path ahead to the finish line seemed straightforward and clear. After all that had happened, the Security Chief could only furrow her brow, doubting the map that lay before her.
“Alden,” she called out, “Check the status of the ship …again. Are things still the way they were before the… shift?” It would have been wonderful if things had been magically fixed, but Art knew better than to hope that the gaping hole in the race’s original vehicle’s housing -the aeroshuttle and its bay- was magically gone. She certainly still had a slight strain on her lungs.
Screens outlined in red; a sign that another ship had locked weapons on them. A different klaxon sounded, a softer one than the emergency red alert, but still a sound that cut right through one’s thoughts. Four impacts shook the ship, though their shields held, it wasn’t unfelt. Like fireworks under their feet, the vibration went through Art’s body as she made the conscious decision to stand still, as to not chance her own movement contradicting the firepower, and causing her to fall over yet again.
“Sensors are gone again!” Someone called out, their voice almost sing-song with the tone of expectation. In this race, the theme was clearly “expect the unexpected”, and Art was just about up to her elbows with unexpected.
“All right,” she said, putting both her hands on either edge of a console. “Wright, get over here. Go up to the Bridge and get actual, from-the-source confirmation that there are no more ridiculous anomalies in our way. And then get back here and report, because next thing we know, the internal comms will go out and we’ll all be transformed into fish or something.”
