President Khushku crossed her arms. The thin gold cybernetic implants that ran along either side of her body bent seamlessly, like a metallic tattoo.
“Yes, perhaps an interim ambassador is in order — someone with less baggage, though many Riani have cognitive cyberware that interferes with most forms of telepathy. You have shrewd instincts, commander. I was prepared to shut the door, but your crew has shown me a side of your Federation that I hadn’t expected. You’ve made an effort to understand the difficulties that we face, rather than judging us for failing to meet your standards.”
The image of Saida Gebrezghi frowned. “That would be an unfortunate outcome, Commander. Perhaps you should discuss with your captain before we make any hasty decisions.” she said, her voice tinged with something like frustration. “The Federation Diplomatic Corps selects ambassadors very carefully. It could take months before a new one is chosen, especially if you narrow the selection to certain species.
“Even though we’re starting out on difficult terms, I’m confident that I’m still the right person for the job. In the name of diplomacy, I was willing to skim over some of the details of the past few days. But in the absence of a sitting ambassador to Riani, I’ll be forced to file a thorough report.”
President Khushku bit her lip thoughtfully. “Perhaps you should return to your ship and we can reconvene shortly. I’ll have the hospital prepare a room for Jonas while he awaits trial. When you’re ready, I’d like to visit your ship to finish this discussion.”
