“Try not to swoon too hard over how handsome and heroic I’m lookin’ in battle here, yeah?”
Pearson’s helmet rattled as Calleja cuffed him sharply round the back of the head.
“Focus!” she barked, her irritation clear. “Klingons first, gettin’ your balls wet later.”
"Rear entrance is clear for now, Lieutenant!" Maxas-Darl called.
“Good job,” came the curt reply as the Security Chief returned her own attention to the incoming defence force.
Mara pulled her teeth back in a feral smile as the locations of the enemy appeared on the inside of her helmet, the data fed back from a tricorder.
Gotcha.
The initial impetus seemed to have replaced itself with a more cautious advance, and now the attackers and defenders were trading fire across what was rapidly becoming a no-mans-land.
The obvious call is to dig in and wait for them, but if I do that I risk us gettin’ encircled. Also, I don’t like waitin’ for my violence to come to me. I’d rather go face it down.
“OK, we’re not gonna sit here, we’re gonna go and get ‘em,” Calleja said into the comm. “If you’re comfortable with your gun, get up to the window and give me suppression fire. Accuracy is useful but not required. Weight of fire is what matters. I want those Klingons duckin’ and divin’. Miller, call the shots. Mayfair, you’re my eyes. Omdor, Han, use some of these materials to barricade that front door. Svenson, support Maxas-Darl as a rear guard in case this goes wrong.”
She looked around.
“We’re goin’ out the back door, 2 teams of 3. I want to pin ‘em in a crossfire and take ‘em out. Watch your aim. Yordan, Partik, Coyn, you’re goin’ left. Vedlar, Howland, you’re with me, we’re goin’ right. Get as wide as you can so you got time if those mad fuckers try and charge. Hold fire until I give the order or you come under fire yourself. Let’s go.”
There was never a question of Calleja sending anyone else out to lead the flanking forces. She led by example and that meant putting herself squarely in the line of fire, and typically enough she was the first one out of the back door, sticking close to cover as she moved.
Her plan was clear. Whilst the weight of fire from the building kept the Klingons focused sharply on where they thought the enemy were, Mara and the Security officers would get alongside and cut them down from the flank as they sheltered from attack from the front.
