Tom's brain was in formal mode as Isabel and Charlotte approached, meaning that out of pure reflex, he stood to greet them.
"Good evening, ladies." He then tried to throttle it back a bit as he gestured to the table, "Please! How could any gentleman deny an offer to share such charming company."
He chuckled at Charlotte's suggestion, "These events can be tricky. I've learned most of the rules, but much like combat, no two situations are ever quite the same. You always want to be sure that you are seen by everyone important, so they remember that they saw you there, even if they didn't engage you directly. You do need to have at least one significant conversation, so that you're able to appear to have made a connection that others will recall as what at least looked like something memorable."
Taking a sip of his beverage, he added, "For example, my sitting here was a tactical risk, as anyone might have come over. I waited until the brass was all seated though, so I knew I would avoid the proverbial "snake pit" unless they had a hard reason to seek me out. You ladies have now saved me from the risk of someone boring coming along and making me listen to them discuss the finer points of mineral deposits on some forsaken rock, or other similar topics. For this, I will be eternally grateful."
Tom leaned forward in a conspiratorial manner as he lowered his voice, "Given the body language of the Captain, I'm going to say that the formal part of this formal event are not likely to last much longer. The guest of honor seems to have shifted from talking business to the charms and enthusiasm of our Chief Science Officer. Fortunately, I don't think he has any idea how smart and crafty she can be, so he had best take care or you might be attending to him in your Sickbay before this trip is over. Not that I think he would mind, but part of me would like to see him reminded of better manners once in a while and the thought of her being the one to educate him does bring just a hint of a smile."
Tom then finally locked eyes with Charlotte as he leaned back again, a devilish grin sliding onto his face, "So, an after party? Mark me as intrigued. What did you have in mind?"
