In general, Klingons are excellent warriors. Centuries of martial tradition, honed not only against each other but against the galaxy at large, helped them to learn how to fight better than most other species were capable of. That was on a species-wide scale, however. When it came to individuals, of course, your results may vary.
The dozen Klingons attacking the Starfleet team, while formidable as any other Klingon would be one-on-one, were not the best and brightest of the Klingon Defense Force. Attacking a defensible position manned by professionals, they weren't able to gain much in the way of traction for their attack. The suppressive fire laid down by the away team kept them pinned in place, while the flank attacks were able to get in beside them and take them down one by one. The last few in the center tried to make a break for it, assaulting the building with a defiant roar that petered out as the hail of phaser fire cut them down several meters from melee.
Mayfair's scans would show that there were no Klingons left in the kilometer or so range of her tricorder, while the lifesigns remaining in the compound - Cardassian and Vorta - were diminishing.
