== NRC Ensign Raven Singer, Engineering Officer ==
Raven gave Keir a knowing nod and said, "Thanks Chief, I'll take it from here."
Looking to the new Saurian member of the team, she began, "The Academy does a great job of teaching you about general systems knowledge, but it is once you get assigned to a ship that your Field Training begins. If you're being assigned to certain ships, they have schools to try and prepare you for duty on things like Carriers and the likes, but this is an older ship, so it's called On the Job Training (OJT). You're certainly going to be putting that systems training to use, but on an older ship like this, you're going to be learning where they hid all the annoying components that are hard to get to."
She produced a PADD from a thigh pocket and tapped the menu a couple of times then held it out to A'kilees, "You'll need to use this for a while, until you get to know your way around. You can manually input your queries, or set it to interact verbally. There's even a setting for your native language, which comes in very handy for someone like you. It cuts down on having two computers trying to listen to you at once. It has classified data on it, so don't allow it to be left laying around, but it contains the location of every component on this entire ship. You can even have t display a specific system schematic and pathways, so you can see where a component fits into a given system for context. A great many components are behind panels and in crawl spaces, the Jeffries Tubes being one of the main ways to access the majority of them. I know it sounds like quite a bit to take in, but you'll be surprised how quickly you pick it up once you've been through enough of the ship. She's smaller than most of those bigger and fancier ships, but this is still good technology that has been battle proven and time tested. We can go over your training records another time. What I want to get into is the hands on stuff, so you can begin to feel at home here."
She then made sure to look him directly in the eyes and asked in a calm and honest tone, "So, do you have any questions for me before we dive into all that? Don't be shy. We're going to be spending lots of time together, so you better get comfortable asking questions."
Raven had a way of speaking very plainly. From someone else, her words might have sounded rehearsed or as some sort of lecture, but her mannerisms made it come across as if they were simply talking about the weather or any other mundane topic. Her outfit didn't even appear to be showing any rank. It didn't seem to matter to her that Saurians were relatively uncommon. She was treating him like she would anyone else. What was important to her was that he needed to learn things and she was going to do her best to teach them to him. If they got into combat and he couldn't do his job, people could die, including them. The practicality of her approach didn't really need to be said. If you were on a ship in space, you knew this to already be true.
== Tags to both. Don't worry, I'm not going to actually drag you through training. This does set up the idea though, so we can then post about various things you might experience in the course of your training until you find yourself writing as part of the main missions. Do feel free to ask her any questions your character might have though. ==
