"It's not mine either, but after spending most of my life on a freighter, it's nice to pretend that I'm in some forest."
Mara smirked.
“Sure. I’ll give you that,” she replied. “Beats Bandar City any day.”
After the Security Chief’s half lesson half rant on knife technique, she was a little surprised to hear Svenson wanted to throw things. But hey, takes all sorts I suppose, she thought to herself.
“You wanna throw? Sure.” Mara chuckled to herself. “I dunno if you remember that Artemismas thing I got conned into doin’. But when we were packin’ up, I couldn’t help it. I had to go see if I could beat the high scores on the knives and axes. Turns out, took a couple of goes on the axes. Didn’t chuck many of them around when I was growin’ up. The knives though, I had that one beat with a blade still to throw. Although I really wouldn’t tell anyone to throw ‘em my way.”
The Amazonian officer picked up a couple of throwing blades. Her technique was very different to standard. Instead of the throwing motion coming from shoulder height, she started low, her left arm coming up from her right hip and whipping up away from her body. When she let go of the knife it flew like an arrow and the whole target shook as the blade thudded home in the red bullseye. The next one joined it a second later, both knives with the hilts angled down slightly as a result of the method used.
“When I was learnin’, I wasn’t doin’ it on targets,” Mara admitted with a shrug. “There’s advantages to startin’ low. Ribs get in the way of a good throw. You come up underneath, less of a problem. Well. Less of a problem for me. Much more of a problem for the poor bastard I’m throwin’ at. It took a lot of practice to get a feel for the release angle ‘cause I wasn’t doin’ it like everyone else. But I got it down now. I don’t miss often. I can do it the normal way, I just prefer mine.”
Calleja picked up a couple more knives and this time the technique was much more what someone would expect to see. Overarm, much like throwing a dart or a baseball. But the net effect was the same. Two more blades firmly wedged in the central circle of the target.
“How ‘bout you? I’ve done enough grandstandin’,” Mara said with a feral smile. “How does a DS9 native throw?”
