The sensor data was quickly returned with quite clear results. Gath reported, "Sir, although Midshipman Cortez posed a fair hypothetical argument, the evidence appears to be to the contrary. Scans have shown their communication systems to be designed only to handle high-gain radio signals, which even when directed in a fairly tight configuration and direction, they are quite slow and rather short range by our standards and certainly not effective for interstellar communications. It is mostly intended for line of sight communications within a system. They appeared to not even have the ability to use laser based communications. I did find what might be a data storage system, which appears physically protected. Unfortunately, their power is too weak to attempt to initiate a link to their computer systems and their craft is too fragile for us to risk attempting any sort of automated power transfer."
Gath felt as if there was little else he could do at this point, "Sir, I recommend that a Damage Control Team be used to extract the data manually, as they are most prepared for any other possible malfunctions that might be encountered in a retrieval operation. They might also be able to determine if it is possible to extract the crew with their stasis pods intact. The ship poses no threat to ours, so the only risk would be to crew who might venture into the immediate area. I might suggest a shuttle be used with standard Engineering EVA suits, which have a slightly higher armor rating than normal EVA gear. The shuttle could provide shield coverage for part of the distance as the team moves to the craft and also provides possible emergency options for the team."
