Amila wasn't sure what to make of the new midshipman. He was bold. Being willing to speak up to power in a respectful manner certainly was a positive trait that could be fostered, but while he was offering up debate and arguably uninformed opinions, Amila was busy gathering more information. Information that Midshipman Cortez would have at his fingertips if he had asked for orders and taken a station rather than jumped into the debate. She made a mental note to address him privately later.
"Commander Ameen, I was able to get some more information," Amila announced, pausing briefly so that she would have everyone's attention.
"Long range sensors have given us more information on Icarus III, I can put up on the main viewscreen if you like, sir. The planet is desolate."
Amila gave the Commanding Officer a soft and subtle smile, before continuing, "Type K planet, sir. Mostly carbon dioxide, very thin atmosphere. No sentient life as we know it," the Chief Science officer explained. "The planet likely faced a major ecological event approximately 98,000 years ago that likely wiped out civilization. There are remnants of fossilized structures on the southern continent - they would have been large ones, mostly eroded at this point. No energy signatures whatsoever coming from the planet, no signs of a satellite network, no radio traffic."
"We may have to get closer to confirm if there are other life signs, but I would wager there might be some flora," she suggested. "It's hard to say."
"I'd say this changes things," Amila stated. "This could have been their one hope to try to save their people from extinction. There is no world to take them back to. We owe it to them, and to society as a whole to save them. It's the right thing to do."
"I'd like to bring them aboard, turn them over to medical staff, learn what we can from the ship, and go to Icarus III and study it further," Amila suggested.
