Ameen watched the scan results populate the main viewscreen, the grim red lines of the subterranean collapse confirming the tragic reality. He turned his gaze to Midshipman Cortez.
"Your analogy to the Botany Bay is astute, Midshipman," Ameen said, his voice grave. "And your theory about the underground migration appears correct. Tragically, however, it seems they did not survive the transition."
He walked to the center of the bridge, the decision now made. The moral debate was settled by the silence of the planet below. They were the only help coming.
"We are not looking at a violation of the Prime Directive," Ameen announced, addressing the entire bridge crew. "We are looking at a rescue operation for the sole survivors of a species. We have an obligation to secure those lives."
He turned to his First Officer. "Commander Keir, assemble an away team. I want the Aura prepped for immediate launch The Broken Arrow's hull is too unstable for transporters, and I won't risk a beam-out through that interference."
He began listing his assignments, pointing to the officers.
"Commander Keir, you have command of the team. Take Midshipman A'kilees with you; his plan for hull access was sound, and we may need to cut our way in."
"Midshipman Brennan," he added, turning to the tactical officer. "You're piloting. The Aura is a heavy bird, but I need a precision approach to match their drift without thruster wash destabilizing their hull. Get them close, but keep it gentle."
"Lieutenant Gath, you're on point. Secure the entry and ensure the ship is safe for the medical team."
"Lieutenant Ra'an, I want you on that computer core. If we can't save the ship, we must save their history. Midshipman Cortez," he added, looking at the young science officer, "you're with her. You've got a good head for historical forensics; put it to use."
"And Doctor O'Fee," he said, looking to the CMO. "Your priority is the cryo-pods. Assess them, stabilize them if you can, but do not wake them up until we know it is safe to do so."
Ameen sat in the center chair, the weight of command settling on his shoulders.
"You have your orders. Bring them home, Commander."
