As the gamma burst began to discharge from the secondary deflector, Jadaris stared at the screen in silence. The hum of the stressed warp core was all he could hear as the tension rose. And then, nothing. Nothing but the red lights of discharged emergency capacitors.
A few seconds later, the engines began to throttle back, and Jadaris didn't know if they had won or lost, but then several engineers began to shout in victory, and as Jadaris routed power back from the engines to other critical systems, he smiled. They had won by a shed scale, but they had won. His gambit had paid off in destabilizing the opponents' subspace fields.
"Alright. Lets get power stabilized. I need teams ready to inspect the engine conduits for damage that we can repair before we get home. Winning or losing, we're not letting the ship fall apart before we get back." He began to restart systems he had powered down to divert their energy to the engines with, running diagnostics as he did so.
