On the bridge, the mood was one of controlled tension. Ameen stood by the tactical rail, his eyes moving from the main viewscreen—dominated by the spinning, debris-riddled carcass of the Broken Arrow—to the status displays at the tactical station.
The away team was assembling. He could hear the comms traffic from the shuttlebay: Keir's orders, Ra'an reassuring her midshipman, and A'kilees requesting heavy equipment.
Good, Ameen thought. They're taking the right precautions.
He turned to his Chief Tactical Officer.
"Lieutenant Powl," Ameen said, keeping his voice low enough not to disturb the bridge's rhythm. "We'll need to drop the aft shields to clear the Aura for launch. Given the debris field in orbit of the planet, I don't want to leave us exposed for long."
He gestured to the sensor readings of the alien vessel.
"I want a tractor beam solution plotted and ready on standby. If that alien ship's hull starts to disintegrate while our team is inside, I want to be able to stabilize it instantly. Don't wait for my order if the structural integrity drops below critical."
He paused, glancing at the empty helm station where Brennan had been moments before.
"And Lieutenant... once the shuttle is away, I want to hear more about this 'starfighter' concept you were discussing with Lieutenant Krandall. If we are going to be operating in debris fields like this often, having agile support craft might be more than just a theory."
