"Command, I am Midshipman Ava Baldwin reporting for duty, sir. Here are my transfer orders," and she presented a pad that contained the orders for the Commander to take.
Taking the proffered orders, Keir gave the new Midshipman a nod of respect and waited while the CO gave his greeting.
Another Commander had approached, and she remained at attention.
"At ease, Midshipman," the Commander said, his voice calm as he approached the pair. He noted the slight hesitation she had shown earlier regarding the command structure—understandable, given the Zephyr's unique rank distribution.
"I am Commander Ameen," he introduced himself, nodding to the insignia on his collar. "Welcome to the Zephyr. I see you have already noticed that she is... distinct from the ships you trained on at the Academy."
Am I that easy to read? she wondered. I will have to practice my Vulcan stoicism more, or everyone will be able to read me.
"She is a dedicated Destroyer, yes," Ameen said, addressing the observation he often saw in new eyes accustomed to the sprawling layouts of explorers. "She is built for function, not luxury. You will find that means she requires a hands-on crew. Logic and precision are valued highly here."
He turned his gaze toward the tactical station.
"Your Department Head, Lieutenant Gath, values those traits as well. He is the Klingon officer currently running a threat assessment at the tactical station," Ameen gestured. "Report to him. He will see to your station assignment."
A little rattled by the appearance of Commander Ameen, who was obviously 'the Captain,' and even more rattled by the appearance of a mean-looking Klingon, she answered with a sharp, 'Yes, sir, Commander.'
"Yes indeed, welcome to Zephyr; what she lacks in polish and finery she makes up for it in sheer tenacity and toughness. We are a small crew, Midshipman, so I look forward to witnessing what you have to add to our team's efforts." LCdr Keir 77 added.
Recovering quickly and adopting the most stoic expression she could, she spoke with confidence, "I assure you, Commander Ameen, Commander Keir, I have the logic and precision that is required. Thank you for the welcome."
Turning hir head s/he spoke just loud enough for the COS to hear. "Lieutenant Gath, you have a new officer." And with a nod to the Midshipman s/he added, "I am certain that you will work well together, Midshipman."
The FO's tone clearly and politely indicated that Ava was dismissed. So Ava nodded to both Commanders and proceeded to walk over to Lt Gath's station. She approached with caution, not knowing what to expect, but what exuded from the Klingon was a surprise indeed.
I never thought it possible... but..but... this Klingon could be a Vulcan! In fact, he could teach me how to be more Vulcan-like.
"Greetings and salutations, Midshipman Baldwin. I'm Lieutenant Gath, the Chief of Security. I suggest that you make your first priority be familiarizing yourself with the controls and consoles of this ship. Begin with the main Security station, here on the Bridge and then expand your education to all other Security locations on the ship. It is an older ship, but since not everything is as customizable as on the newest ships, they had to make the features as convenient and efficient as possible. Learn their capabilities and limitations. Once you are comfortable with that, we'll work on your orientation with the rest of the ship...every inch of it. When we are done, you'll know this ship almost as well as if you were an Engineer. Do you have any questions before we start?"
So much for 'Zephyr as 'gentle west winds', this sounds like it is going to be a howling gale!
"Thank you Lt Gath, for the welcome. I'm sure I have much to learn, and I am upto the task. I look forward to working with you and the other security crew. I have familiarized myself with the general layout of the Zephyr. I have only one question. Could you point out where the main Security Station is on the pridge, please?
