AQ/D10 - Ten Forward
#18
Jez sat there sipping her water. What Alex had said about the stasis pod made sense to her. By all reasonable definitions, it was all hers in the legal sense, but under Betazoid Law, the other partner has rights. Jez never told Devyn that she was pregnant; someone must have told him.

Then there were the moral and ethical questions: did she have the right to keep Devyn from his child? Was it right to keep a child from a parent, especially a parent like Devyn, then there were Devyn’s parents? Did she have the right to keep her child from its grandparents? Yes, Devyn was bad, but his parents were worse. They were rich, powerful and didn’t care who they hurt to meet their goals

“Alex, I’m a horrible person. I didn’t tell Devyn I was pregnant, I.. I don’t know how he found out, but he did. I know I should have told him, but I just couldn’t bear the thought of raising a child with him, not after he called me a mongrel, not after he said I was nothing.”

Jez wasn’t even sure she would make a good mother, let alone a single mother. She had to admire Commander Talion raising a child by himself. Yes, he had Cindy, but it just wasn’t the same as having two biological parents.

“Alex, with no disrespect towards Cindy, but what’s it like to raise a child by yourself?” Jez Said, her tone a bit sad and worried, but then her tone changed to that of annoyance and outrage when she said, “Oh, and by the way, why did you make Cindy sit at a separate table?” Jez liked Cindy.

Suddenly, the entire situation hit Jez; it seemed like no matter what choice she made, it would be the wrong one. She could hold it back anymore; the tears were starting to flow like a raging river. She felt embarrassed for having lost control of her emotions; she just wanted to run back to her quarters and cry.

While looking around for a handkerchief, “Forgive me, my tears and lack of emotional control.” Said Jez as she sniffed, because her nose was stuffed.

Jez felt like a complete idiot; she should never have come into Ten Forward. She had no right dragging her friends into this mess, especially Alex. She felt like she was drowning.
