Listening to Jez, for just a moment, Alex had to think of what she meant when she referenced her Teddy Bear. Then he recalled it was a pet name for someone who had been a mentor, especially in formative years. She then surprised him by saying she wished for Alex to be a Godfather to the potential child in question. He had heard this title used in a number of cultures and it was often similar in most of them. There were deep implications that could be attributed to the role, but there would be time to discuss that in detail in the future. For now, he would discuss the topic at hand.
He grinned, "I confess that you're catching me a bit by surprise with this. Should you ever decide to finish what you began with this child, I would be honored."
Alex had a feeling that Jez was more thinking in terms of his protective nature being of benefit to the child than a religious upbringing. He grew up invoking The Fates, but he was certainly not a religious man. No, he thought it was more about what she thought about his ethics and sense of fairness. He also highly valued education and stability in how he was bringing up his own child. There was a great deal of his life that he deliberately kept secret, but that was not for his own safety alone. Only Kristina had really known the whole truth. His daughter also knew a large part of it, but secrets only stayed a secret if you didn't tell others about it. It all made even Alex feel crazy to think about how delicate the galaxy could be if his fears were ever realized. It wasn't paranoia if you already knew the truth. He quickly snapped himself back out of his private thoughts and back to the conversation at hand.
Jez spoke of her feelings on the matter of her former partner. Alex nodded and said, "No, I don't think less of you. You have every right to be upset about how you were treated and it is only natural that you should want to stand up for yourself. It is also reasonable to consider that this experience has possibly brought out some maternal instincts. In any case, we can take those efforts as far as you want to go. It will be a legal process, but it all begins with firing the proberbial first shot."
Alex pushed his PADD in front of her and said, "All you need to do is to place your hand completely on the screen for three seconds as flatly as possible, to get a good reading. It will include a DNA scan as your official legal signature. I'll take care of the rest. In the unlikely event that he should he ever attempt to bring actual violence into the struggle, I can provide you with private security and , if necessary, even sanctuary as well. We'll worry about such things later, but I doubt that your ex has his own planet or the ability to contend with a fight on that scale. In my experience, it's not likely to come to that, but I've learned to be prepared."
