Pearson laughed, a low, easy sound, kicking water lazily as he rolled back onto his side to keep pace with the kayak. “Oi, I wasn’t lookin’,” he said, utterly unconvincing. “I was conductin’ a professional situational awareness assessment.”
His grin gave the lie to it immediately. “Just happened the situation was you,” he added, tone light but blue eyes honest as they flicked up to meet hers. He obviously was enjoying the moment for what it was. He reached out, fingers brushing the side of the kayak just enough to stay connected as they drifted together.
“And yeah,” Ollie went on, floating easily beside her, “that’s kinda our thing, yeah? Easy, right? No drama. You paddle off into the sunset, I jump in after wearing me banana hammock. Works out for both of us.”
At her last comment, he snorted, rolling onto his back again, “Oh, is that the plan?” he said, mock-thoughtful. “You’re gonna even the score, are ya?” He turned himself upright and began to slowly tread water, Ardanna's jest only serving to encourage him, “Careful, Svenson. I grew up surfin’ rips and losin’ bets. You start makin’ things ‘even’ and who knows what might happen." A beat. Then, softer, still playful, but more genuine. “But hey,” he added, beginning to swim alongside again, “I’m in no rush. Lake’s nice. Company’s better. Barbecue’ll still be there when we’re done pretendin’ you're not enjoyin’ this.”
He flashed her that familiar, wicked grin.
“Lead the way, Kayak Queen. But I gotta say, you're missing out being all the way up there while I'm all down here.” He flashed that same flirty grin, "Though, I understand if you don't want to - or is it can't swim?" His tone was as much challenge as invitation, though the statement was obviously meant to try to get her alongside him.
