The Broken Arrow
Midshipman Cortez seemed to be battling an internal struggle.  While his technique was well executed in his approach to the rather unique task, the confines of the small working area and his efforts on the hull of the ship seemed to be a bit more hazardous than it would typically appear.  His suit began reporting off a pressurization leak.  Given the vast vacuum of space, this was naturally quite disconcerting for the young officer.  Before Torok could even begin to mention the notification to the Captain Ameen, Cortez began having some complications with maintaining composure.  For humans, this would be considered a very natural and expected reaction.  For a Vulcan however, such a display would be viewed quite distasteful.

Powl was gratified to be aboard a ship with a great many species that all experienced and for the most part embraced their emotions.  Where Torok would make a rather pitiful excuse for a support model, he had been around with a Star Fleet crew long enough to understand that each culture brings its own idiosyncratic differences that complete a well rounded and capable crew.  In this case, a very young and brand new officer was facing, in all probability the most difficult moment experienced.  Completing his assigned task despite these circumstances, certainly warranted recognition and respect.

"Captain, Midshipman Cortez's suit has begun to depressurize. The exact cause is unknown.  The suit is reporting that the leak is in the front portion of the chest.  I cannot engage the transporter beam without the connection that Mr. Cortez is attempting to fabricate.  This means that the entire away team, and the crew of the Broken Arrow are dependent on his efforts."

The needs of the many...

Torok looked for just a moment to Ameen.  The cool expression masked the anxiety that was palpable on board the Zephyr.  Even Torok was striving to operate his tasks with all available skills he had gained, lost, and then regained over the many years with Star Fleet. A capable crew can sometimes encounter the most unfortunate and inevitable failure. Every officer on the Bridge was giving every ounce of, "elbow grease" to use a human idiom, that they could possible find in the reservoir. The vein in Ameen's neck was pulsating as everyone was operating with a high degree of adrenaline in an effort to rescue not only the crew of the Broken Arrow, but also the compatriots that bravely ventured to attempt to save a civilization that was considered a total loss until just a few hours prior.

When Torok reported that he was engaging the transporter beam, the entire ship seemed to breath in deep and hold.  For a moment, only the sound of the LCARS and the various notifications, alarms, and background noise of the computer operation could be heard.  Hearts stopped, eyes didn't blink, movement became stillness.  Time had stopped.  Although there were no temporal anomalies, tachyon radiation, or other indications of a temporal disturbance on the sensors.  The only sensors that could detect this phenomenon was living people.

A unique experience...

The Broken Arrow's life force finally gave out and she crumbled.  A priceless relic loss to time being ever the cruel and final mistress that relentlessly preyed upon all of existence; time finally had the last word.  The entire ship fell apart.  According to scans, it would have been impossible for the away team, or the cryostasis bound crew to endure.
Almost anticlimactically, the panel on which Torok had been toiling chimed a small and unassuming report about the fate of everyone aboard the Broken Arrow.  Their fate had been decided.

"Captain, transport complete.  We have them."

Torok stopped for a moment. Despite his austere training and mental discipline, the emotions he worded so hard to suppress came rushing like river rapids.  A powerful force that...almost found its way into a smile.  Although, a smile in Torok's case would have meant the slightest curl on the edge of his mouth; it would be practically imperceptible.

"Excellent work, Lieutenant Powl. That was threading a needle in a hurricane."

Powl nodded, and plainly said, "thank you sir.  It would not have been possible without the diligence of Midshipman Cortez."

Almost immediately, Captain Ameen turned away, bound for the turbolift.  His place, as Captain, was certainly in Sickbay to check on his crew, and that of the Broken Arrow now absconded from their imminent peril.

"Lieutenant Powl, you have the conn. Maintain position and scan that debris field for any other anomalies. Signal Midshipman Brennan to return to the nest once he clears the debris."

Powl perked up for a moment.  He had heard the order, and now needed to use his other skillset.  He signaled on his panel for Ensign West to take over his station as he assumed the conn.  He stood and made his way to the center chair.  Although he had done it countless times in the past aboard the Copernicus.  This was the first on the Zephyr.  She had already proven to be an outstanding vessel, and she was operated by a stellar crew.  Today, the Zephyr became something special.  She had already earned her retirement and had quite the history.  But, as with all Star Fleet missions, this one was unique.  Finding an extinct civilization will always immortalize a tale for the crew, and the Zephyr.

He assumed the chair and began the cool down lap from the marathon they had just completed.

“Aye, I have the conn.”

He took a moment to review his orders, and to check on the status of the ship. “All stations, status report.”

He briefly surveyed the crew and briefly reflected that their performance never waned, and still persisted after such a harrowing event.

“Helm, maintain position.”

Rotating in the chair to address the Science Department Head, “Lieutenant Ra’an, begin a sensor scan of the debris.  Notate any further anomalies…please.”

Remember the proper social protocol.  Using please, invokes positive results in 78.9 of each occurrence.

He returned his focus straight forward to the screen.

“Midshipman Brennan, excellent work in piloting the shuttle.  You are cleared to return to the Zephyr.  Use extra caution when navigating the debris field. An adequate performance.”

While using the term “adequate” certainly is a lackluster phrase for most other species, this was high praise from a Vulcan.

From each order that came, the crew rapidly responded with deft hands, and sharp intellect.  The familiar and welcomed white noise of the crew operating resumed.  Seemingly, the recent events were set aside like they never happened.  Conversation and reports began flowing and peace had been restored.

We have them…now the work begins.
