"My religious belief, my training, it all says that you fight until the last breath. But the universe doesn't fit into such neat boxes, does it?" Robin finally looked at Mara. "You know that better than me."
The Security Chief chuckled quietly.
“No. No it don’t,” she replied.
It was her turn to look away.
“I get the arguments for religion. You look at this place, right here right now, sure. Easy to say this could be divine. But I’ve seen way too much from way too young to ever believe in any kind of benevolent plan. The things people go through back home… Earth really is heaven in comparison. And I feel kinda guilty that I get to be here whilst there’s literal billions on Bandar without consistent power or sanitation or even the fuckin’ rule of law in places.”
She shook her head slowly.
“I’m glad you believe and I’m glad it brings you comfort. Just wish I could find somethin’ that would do the same for me sometimes. The one constant is change and I just feel like I ain’t got that anchor, that somethin’ to hold onto as it all rushes around me. That’s why I train so hard. I wanna be ready for whatever comes at me next. ‘Cause I know I ain’t got as long as I think I have before the next thing hits me in the face.”
Her broad shoulders slumped a little as Calleja sighed.
“Sorry. There’s me suckin’ the soul outta the moment,” she said. “We made it back, we’re surrounded by friends and plenty o’ food and drink and fuckin’ paradise. Go and enjoy it. I’ll get my head right in a bit.”
