Beno smiled as she listened to both of them, finding it refreshing to see a rising officer starting to trust their instincts. It just needed a bit of refining, maybe some guidance too. She was beginning to take more interest in the officer, even considering how she might fare as a department head one day.
“Captain, there’s something I should make you aware of, something not in any of my reports.” Beno composed herself. “I felt I should be completely transparent with them. The president and even the general expected us to strong-arm them into submission, pointing out their faults and imposing our laws. She was well-defended against that kind of tactic. But, like Hannibal, we took the harder route, approaching through the undefended area. It caught her off guard, confusing and impressing her, mostly because the last thing she expected was our attempt to understand.”
She rephrased slightly. “We wanted to hear their side to reach an understanding. She knew all my cards were on the table, except one. She provided useful details about what was planned versus what happened, and honestly, I can’t see a difference between their actions and what we might do in similar circumstances.
