Lakes and Recreation - Artemis Shore Leave
#60
“No’ yet I’m not but gi’ me a minute, I’ll get ta ya.”

Robin bit back a sharp rejoinder. The last thing she wanted to do was throw fuel on the fire, though the same irritation at Mara's quick resort to threats that she had felt recently resurfaced.

That's the ganger responding. She needs to get that under control. It's her go-to response to anything, and it's going to get her in major trouble. It wasn't that long ago she was seconds away from taking a swing at Coleman... and he was probably the one person on the ship who could lay her out.

But the Security Chief's next words showed that she was at least trying.

“Why is it always her, an’ why is it always fuckin’ me that ends up payin’ the fuckin’ price! I got nothin’ up there to keep in place, so wha’s the point in anythin’ under my shirt? Safe enough. Been doin’ it years. An’ it would still o’ been fine if some ginger shitbag hadn’t shoved me in the fuckin’ lake!”

She had wrapped her arms around her chest. In that regard Robin was completely sympathetic. She didn't even swim in public without a pair of shorts over her swimsuit bottom. The people of her home colony thought bikinis were scandalous, and she had always been extremely shy about showing skin. Getting used to Federation standards of nudity after leaving Iota Tau had been beyond difficult. She had outright refused to use the co-ed sonic showers at the Academy and it had earned her a fair share of mockery. But then what hadn't?

“You owe me a fuckin’ shirt, so I can get outta here and get changed. I don’t care where it comes from. But someone get me a fuckin’ shirt or a towel or somethin’.”

Aeryn was being a voice of reason and calm. “This was a step too far, but let's salvage what we can from it and you can come with me to get dry and change Mara.” A towel arrived.

Robin gave a grateful nod to the redheaded Science officer. Beka started apologizing as Mara wrapped the towel around herself, but it was clear that the Bandaran wasn't having it. This wasn't much like Beka, but then she did have a well-developed sense of survival. If the CoS had decided to lay into her there wouldn't have been much to do about it except find a phaser set to heavy stun.

Mara was trying to control her anger, but the fuse was still lit. “That’s not a fuckin’ excuse and you know it,” she growled. “I can’t tear bits off you for losin’ your temper ‘cause… Yeah. But I can bollock you for fightin’ someone tryin’ to calm shit down. And I can absolutely blame you for embarrassin’ the shit outta me.”

“I know. I have to own that, and I really am sorry. You were coming to help. I should have stopped. And I’m so sorry for what happened to you. After the chance you gave me before the last mission, the last thing I’d do is antagonise you again on purpose. Please don’t mistake incompetence for strategy here.”

It helped. They weren't exactly at the 'crisis averted' stage yet, but it seemed to be enough... for now.

“Apology accepted. Now get outta my sight before I change my mind,” Mara spat. “And can someone find the bitch that caused all this, ‘cause I feel a common assault charge comin’ her way.”

"My job. I'll handle it," Robin said. If anything she could vent her frustration at having an idyllic day in the green hills of England disrupted by tearing the one responsible a new one. "Beka... go over there and meet your newest doctor." She gave a head tilt at Tes Th’etellis, and the tone of her voice indicated that it wasn't a request. "And you might want to try and make a good impression on him, since he's assigned to alpha shift and will be reporting to you. Right now he probably thinks everyone on the Artemis is crazy. And I'm not sure I can disagree."

She took a deep breath, blew it out. That Augment-speed sprint to get her to the scene of the action was catching up to her. She felt winded and her legs ached. "In the meantime I'm going to go have a chat with our friend and make her reconsider her life choices." She gave a nod to Mara before walking over to the Bajoran woman.

"All right, who are you?"
