Lakes and Recreation - Artemis Shore Leave
#68
Mara was grateful to Robin for taking over the whole slapgate inquest. The mood the COS was in, she didn’t trust herself not to revert to type and find satisfaction in violence. The adrenaline was pumping and she felt humiliated. It was an unfamiliar feeling but one she absolutely didn’t want to ever have to deal with again.

"I think Robin can handle it," Aeryn remarked to Mara, "It's only a short walk to my friend's pub, so we can get you changed, and then we can come back; it shouldn't take us long with the replicator."

Calleja looked over the gathering, and then shook her head.

“Honestly, I just wanna get outta here and I’m not convinced I wanna come back,” she replied, her voice still low. “I’ve tried bein’ one o’ the group. And look where that’s got me. I shoulda ignored all the voices and kept with the whole rule-by-fear thing.”

There was apparently no sign of her flushed-red face returning to its usual caramel brown hue any time soon, and she felt literally hot and bothered. All she wanted to do was get away, get a shower and get herself together again. Mara had a very limited social battery at the best of times and her unscheduled bath had short-circuited it.

“You stay, I’ll go. No point both our days bein’ ruined. I’ll get over it.” She shook her head. "At least, I hope I will."
