Aeryn understood where Mara was coming from when her friend said that she still couldn't get it, and maybe she never would. Which in itself wasn't an issue, or at least the redhead hoped it wouldn't become one. Mara wasn't wrong with the analogy she used to describe the Security department, grinning despite the nature of the conversation, because it wasn't far off the mark. " I remember that, and yep, it is a lot different, and it took me a little bit to adjust, maybe I still am".
So far, Aeryn had only one mission under her proverbial belt as Science Chief, compared to her tenure in Security. While she had navigated the challenge from a different perspective, it hadn't come without its challenges. Mainly dealing with Lucy, but also being responsible for the probes that had led them to the discovery of the Klingons and the secret base where the clones had been kept prisoner. There were perhaps things to unpick and learn from, not to mention how her previous skills had come into play when Mara had chosen her to be her second in command.
Maybe that also counted as Mara probed deeper into Aeryn's reasoning for switching departments, and Aeryn wasn't going to let her friend keep guessing, wanting her to understand why it hadn't been an easy decision.
" At first, I was fine. I handled the missions to the best of my ability, but that last one changed something within me, made me question my mortality, I guess, and made me realise that life was too short. Also, was I really happy continuing on the same path? Had I achieved everything I wanted? It took a lot of soul searching, agonising, and finally a conversation with Damian for me to want to make the change, to do it now while I still could. You may not know this, but I started in Science when I first went to the Academy, until fate had other ideas, and a switch to Security stopped me from washing out".
Aeryn paused for a moment. " I love what I do, I love Security, and yet I know I'm doing the right thing for me, and I understand if you still don't get it".
