An older man approached them and Alex studied him while trying his best not to look like he was doing so. It was easy to keep quiet as the Captain responded to his inquiry. Although he didn't recognize him, the feel he got was of a combat veteran.
It had been a nice surprise seeing Jelaya show up. He had not been aware that she was joining the crew. When their family had been on ship together, Alex had been in the habit of having dinner with them and playing with their daughter Aasha before bedtime. It had been an interesting time and had made him think about having kids. That seemed so long ago now. The flow of thoughts made his mind wander. So much had happened to them all in such a short amount of time.
Those thoughts made Alex think about the fact that Beno had lived a number of lives. That had to be complicated for her. Each time that there was a new host, it was a new person, yet still had all of the memories of the ones that came before. Alex could relate, on a certain level, but it wasn't the same. At a relatively young age, he had managed to accomplish certain goals that should have been impossible. It was true that one had to be careful what it is they wished for. He had played god and now carried the weight of having succeeded in something he perhaps should not have tried to create. In fact, more than one thing, but it came to haunt him all the same. He had also nearly been killed by a god, or something akin to one, though he would likely never really know what that entity really was.
Pickin up his drink to take a sip, he pondered how that was in such contrast to him sitting next to Beno. Their dance had woke him up in a way that he had not expected, but he couldn't lie to himself, it felt good. Did he dare to wish? The thought scared him a little. Being scared was good though. his sister had taught him that. You should feel butterflies when you reached uncharted territory. Sometimes there were great discoveries there, but sometimes the map was marked with warnings of monsters. Nervous was good, because it reminded him of caution.
Beno spoke to Cologero after Cindy did and Alex was reminded of how he liked hearing her voice. He was reminded of how the right voice lit up the same parts of the brain for a person that music did at times. It signalled certain connections and he felt those connections applied here. That made him smile to himself. Yes, this could be a good thing. At the very least, he was going to dare for it to be a good thing. His mind responded by reminding him of the details he had read about the Trill nervous system. Most aspects were like most humanoids, though there were obvious special pathways associated with the joining. There were also some very fine lines of nerves that followed along a pathway of the spots, running from head to toe. Yep, there were definitely some perks to being a scientist that studied neural pathways for cybernetic implants. He began to wonder if he would get a chance to discuss that with her in the near future and he couldn't help but smile again.
