“Would you ask him to… hold the salt, please?”
“You rebel you,” Beka teased with an impish grin. “Sure.”
The doctor picked her way over to the grills.
“Doctor Homewrecker. What cannae get ye?” The expression on the man behind the grill was amiable, but the eyes very much were not.
“Ah. I guess you’re one of Aeryn’s friends,” Sydesh replied, doing her best to keep her expression warm even as her shoulders slumped just a little. “I have apologised many times. I will do again. But she is way better off with me in her past than her future.”
“She’ll be the judge o’ that,” came the reply. “Anyway. Food?”
“Yeah…” The redhead rallied from the back foot. It wasn’t the first time she’d been given grief for breaking up with the CSO, and it wasn’t going to be the last either. “Can I get a rib-eye steak, hold the salt, and cheeseburger and chips?”
The cook nodded and busied himself behind the grill as Beka rounded up a couple of bottles of cola, a bowl of pesto pasta salad and some cutlery. She was handed plates with the hot food on with a distinct lack of ceremony, but she still managed to nod her thanks as she carried her uneven load back to the bench.
“Let me land this… About the only thing I’m ever trusted to land, mind you,” the doctor joked as she got everything down without spilling anything.
“OK. One rib-eye steak, hold the salt. You let me pick, I picked,” she added with a grin as she handed over the knife and fork. “Couple of bottles of cola. If you want one, help yourself, otherwise it won’t go to waste. The rest is me. Because I haven’t eaten, and if there’s ever a time to misbehave with the diet, it’s when you’ve got good food like this on offer.”
Beka tucked in without ceremony. She wasn’t anywhere near the same weight class as the Amazonian Security Chief, but there was still a decidedly muscular edge to her build that called for calories.
“Mmm,” she managed, swallowing down a mouthful of chips. “OK, that is good. Sorry, I’m not a great conversationalist when I’m eating. Tell me a bit about yourself. What do you do for fun?”
