“ So Diaz, are you related to Armando Diaz or Bernal Díaz del Castillo by chance?” Asked Lieutenant K'Vada, with a gleam of curiosity in her eye.
Ethan hesitated for a second, not quite sure how to answer the question at first. Neither of those names were in any way familiar to him, but given the fact that K'Vada mentioned them specifically, he figured there had to be some history there. He took another sip from his glass before shaking his head. "Doesn't ring a bell. They sound like Spaniards--but then, my father is descended from Mexicans, so I could probably find some Spanish blood in my family tree if I went back far enough. My ancestors left Earth a while back, though. At least a century, I think."
That got a chuckle from Cologero. "Isn't that the loaded question? It is a good thing for me that the sins of the Father didn't keep me out, deep in my family tree is one of the biggest kings in organized crime. I came from Cefu Sicily as you put it a backwater place, it was great to grow up there."
That caught Ethan even more off-guard, but it was an impressive revelation too. For obvious reasons, he'd only ever met a handful of Earth natives throughout his life. Like most other colonists, Ethan also dreamed of visiting there one day. It was a bucket-list item, seeing the birthplace of humanity and all that--not to mention its wealth of art and cultural history that was famous throughout the Federation. "Sicily? So you're from Earth then? And Europe, no less. Sounds like an interesting childhood."
"I look forward to working with you, we are going to have to be two halves of the same part. For now lets work on those first day apprehensions, I am not exactly cozy with anyone but I know things," Cologero went on. Ethan raised his glass slightly in acknowledgement. "Likewise, sir. I gotta say, a ship like this is a heck of a place to get your feet wet," he answered with a nervous grin. "If she handles as good as she looks, then I think I'm in for a decent cruise."
