Alex slipped on a loose pair of cargo shorts and a loose shirt that would have been right at home on some beach shoreline. At hearing about her fondness for crapes, he smiled and said, "That's awesome! We love crapes."
Reyna was still in her nightshirt that came down to about her knees, but jumped up and down in a very animated way, clearly excited. It was a rare moment of Reyna acting like a small child of her age instead of sounding like a small adult. In that way, the morning felt more normal than ever. Reyna hadn't said anything, but seeing Beno shrugging off the more common ideas about nudity and seeming to embrace the lack of shame that their family had about just being a close family, she seemed happier than Beno could ever recall seeing her before. The girl was practically glowing as she ate her breakfast and drank her glass of juice.
It was halfway through Reyna's second helping of crapes that she finally spoke up. Tilting her head from side to side as she began, her gaze finally meeting Beno's eyes again, "Beno? Um...well...I have to ask, because I know lots of things, but this is new territory for me. Does this make you my new mom now?"
Alex almost choked on a bite of food and had to struggle to wash it down with a quick sip of hot coffee. He opened his mouth as if to speak, but then seemed to think it was a bad idea and closed his mouth, waiting to see how Beno handled the question. He realized that he could dive in and try to handle this, but that if Beno was going to be around them like this and if there really was any chance for a real relationship, he needed to let her take this one. This was going to set the stage in one way or another and it was best to see what happened. In Reyna's way, as was often the case, she cut right to the heart of things. She wasn't a typical kid, but if Beno didn't know what she was in for by now, then she never would. The truth was that Alex and Reyna were a package deal. They were unusual in their own unique ways, but he was a single dad and both of them tended to speak with a direct and honest approach at times. This was one of those times. Alex also knew that this was not going to be a single yes or no question either. He knew his daughter and there would be follow-up questions.
