Qi bit his lip. Every possible solution carried its own set of risks — and not only to the ship. A catastrophic mistake could mean war. He felt a chill run down his spine. They needed to think harder. The Cardassians likely expected some sort of trickery. The key would be to make sure that they didn’t feel threatened.
“I think I like hitching the class 3 probes onto the class 8 in a dormant state. We’ll have to be precise about when the smaller probes bail out, but the Class 8 will look innocuous enough when the Cardassians detect it.”
He flipped the holographic image to a detailed schematic of the ship’s power system, taking a moment to let Qab’ataar study it.
“This is our next problem: the ship draws a lot of attention. Many of Yeager’s systems are overpowered, and our sensor fingerprint is fairly distinctive. While I would love to start work on a cloak,” he sighed pointedly, “it’s out of the question for now. In the meantime, I think we need to seriously downplay our firepower. Assuming that the Cardassians discover us at some point, it sends a much different message if we look like a scout vessel, rather than a warship. Any thoughts on how to do that?”
The holographic image floated in the air. Glowing lines coursed over the ship’s skeleton, tracing each system’s power intake.
Just then, d’Tor’an’s voice sounded over the comm system. Qi replied, giving Ris some more time to come up with a proposal.
“Science here. We’re working on a plan to minimize our sensor profile,” Qi replied. “Let us know if the Treaty of Algeron dissolves while we’re en route. That would make our job a lot easier.”
