Taking a sip from the mug of coffee that she was cradling in her hands, Beka leant her elbows against the main reception desk. In uniform, flame red hair tied back, vivid sleeve tattoos hidden under her tunic, she could pass for a normal Star Fleet officer.
I can hide the crazy for short bursts, but it has a horrible habit of erupting when we least need it to!
She smiled to herself and took another sip of coffee.
“Nice to see you’re hard at work.” The voice belonged to Nurse Golat, the older woman who had taken Beka under her wing when the now-Chief Doctor was a fresh midshipman. She was grinning as she spoke. “Almost didn’t recognise you without your scandalously tiny bikini.”
“Hey, by anyone’s standards, that one wasn’t bad at all,” Sydesh replied with a wolfish smile. “I really could have picked something that would have made her eyes pop, but even I’m not dumb enough to wear something like that at a crew gathering.” She paused a moment. “Well. Not normally dumb enough, anyway.”
Golat chuckled quietly to herself.
“You’ll be pleased to hear that the whole thing hasn’t remotely changed opinions of you in the slightest. Both team ‘Sydesh is a slut’ and team ‘Sydesh is given too hard a time’ have reinforced their viewpoints,” she said in an almost conspiratorial whisper.
Beka burst out laughing.
“I bet I know which team is the bigger one,” she managed, before laughing again.
“Best I don’t confirm that one,” Golat replied with a smirk, drawing another laugh from the redheaded doctor. “Have you managed to patch things up with Chief Calleja, or do we have to brace for finding your skinned corpse hanging from a gantry in the cargo bay?”
“So far she’s not shown an inclination to hunt me down, luckily for me,” Beka answered. “I know all too well I’m not winning that fight if it ever happened, black belt or not. I have designed her a couple of tops to help her out, but I’m waiting for the right moment to try and hand them over.”
“That’s a good plan. Unusually good for one of yours.”
“Thanks. I’m trying harder,” Beka quipped. “Back to business for a bit. How are we looking readiness-wise? Everyone finding their way over here?”
“So far so good.” Golat tapped a few commands into the terminal at the station. “Just the last few stragglers to report in, but nobody’s actually late yet.”
“Cool. Hopefully nobody actually needs my boot up their arse, but that would be a first.” Beka had no problem playing the bad cop in the double act she often played with Robin, the two friends almost instinctively able to play their parts in the dance after so long working together.
The quiet was broken by a pair of Security officers walking in, a Bolian cradling his arm with a deathly pale face and an embarrassed looking human woman trailing behind him.
“Oh that’s got to be a record. We haven’t even left dock yet,” Beka said. “I’ve got these two.”
She drained her mug and left it on the desk before moving to intercept the pair.
“OK, what have we got?” she said.
“We were stacking crates in the armoury, and I lost my grip. Ejid ended up taking the full weight and wrenched his arm.” The speaker was human, and she looked mortified at the pain on her Bolian friend’s face.
“This way, let’s get you patched up and back on duty before Calleja notices you’re gone,” Sydesh said with a reassuring smile on her lips. She led the way towards one of the bays and settled the patient down on the biobed before tapping her commbadge.
“Sydesh to Th’etellis. Can you join me in bay 4 please. I have your first patient.”
