"Ease up Cadet, we aren't in a race. Just follow the computer's guidance envelope. It's just like in the simulators. Nice and easy."
Midshipman Hallowette Maxis-Darl sat next to a very apprehensive looking second year cadet, her face calm and confident despite the wave of nervous energy that permeated the cockpit. The Caiitian female purred at Darl's suggestion, adjusting her hands on the controls and reevaluating her readings.
"Good. Now just relax, you're doing just fine." Hally smiled reassuringly at the girl. She thought she'd offer some advice, some other set of pilot wisdom that might further help the younger woman, but she thought better of it. As her father often said, "Hally, you're so good at talking, you sometimes forget you don't have to."
During her time off, Hally had spent a fair amount of time traveling earth, the Luna colony and even Utopia Planetia on Mars. She had applied for a waiver to visit her family on Cardassia, but it had been denied due to present "diplomatic tensions", so she had done her best to keep herself busy, occupied and stimulated - that had worked for about 2 weeks. Finding the downtime to be negatively affecting her mental health, the young Bajoran/Trill hybrid had offered her services as a pilot to anyone in Starfleet who had needed one. Luckily a flight instructor at the Academy had a need, and Hally had jumped at the chance to work - and helping instruct new pilots seemed like a great way to take her mind off her boredom - and her loneliness.
"Ok, there is Starship Alley, slow to thrusters only. Switch flight assist to engage. Let the Computer take us in."
Hally allowed herself a glance over her shoulder, her teal eyes falling on the shipbag she had brought with her. She'd be lying if she said she wasn't ready to resume life on the Artemis. This time away hadn't been long, not really, not in the grand scheme of things - but it had been too long. She was born to fly - to serve, and she was ready to do so again.
"Ok, there is the Artemis. Chirp comms and let them know we are on approach, and requesting permission to dock."
The young Caitian cadet did as asked, and while perhaps not as smooth as an accomplished pilot, she did just fine. Hally smiled at the voice on the other end, an Ensign she was friends with called Trivette.
"Alright, we are cleared - take us in, nice and slow."
The shuttlecraft eased slowly and deliberately to the aft of the ship, centered on the docking bay, and entered gingerly, easing itself to the deck without issue.
"Nice job Cadet Ferrosia! You're going to do just fine on your 2 year assessment. Just follow your training and you'll be flying fleetcraft around by yourself before you know it." Hally's crooked smile was genuine and warm, and beamed with pride. "Shut her down and do your postflight, and you can beam back to the Academy." She placed a hand on the girl's shoulder, "Thanks for the ride home."
