“Fate? Intriguing.”
Sovar’s dispassionate tone and face did little to reveal the inner workings of his mind. While the observation itself had been genuine, Sovar had made the revelation to Miller as more of a way to build camaraderie through levity. A technique, it seemed, he still had to work on.
He also had noticed the slight change in Miller upon the mention of his predecessor. Sovar knew that Coleman would have made connections with the crew, and some of them would likely be missing Commander Coleman’s presence. Though he was uncertain of the exact depth of relationships that the previous commander possessed with his subordinates, particularly with the department heads. There was something about Command that often, though not always, brought people together.
“Thank you, Lieutenant Commander Miller, for indulging my momentary inquisitiveness on the subject of hair pigment.”
They had, while talking, moved out of the primary lab. There was a nostalgic comfortableness for Sovar to explore science-based areas of the ship. While he’d be equally at ease in Security, Tactical, or even the Bridge, there was something different about exploring the uniqueness that the sciences had to offer.
“You had, before I interrupted with my observation, spoken of new and ongoing projects, experiments, and research being conducted. I am interested to know what Aretmis, and your team, are focusing their efforts on.”
Sovar prepared to follow Miller further, paying attention not just to the science around him, but to her specifically. This was his chance to understand and get to know her, before the rigours of both command and mission influenced things. A better chance, in his estimation, to know the real Miller.
