Ethan grinned a little. "I'll keep it in mind, sir." In spite of everything, there was a small part of him that was anxious to start his training. After all, the sooner he proved himself, the less likely he was to be singled out early on for his atypical service record. And getting to sit at the helm of one of the most advanced starships ever made would definitely be a bonus. If the helpful bit of gossip he'd gotten from an orderly on the quarterdeck was any indication, this would be just about the perfect time for real-scenario training too. Apparently the Aquila had just come off a major cruise that had involved some surface operations, so more likely than not, the skipper would probably arrange for a shakedown run before his next orders came in.
Ethan finished the rest of his drink just as Lieutenant Coppola spoke up again. "It looks like everything is winding up here, what should the three of us do? I am not ready to call it a night yet."
Ethan couldn't exactly blame him. The guy had just scored a promotion, and given that this event was a little more scaled up than your average "informal officers' gathering", the energy was probably still pretty high at this point. "If it's all the same to you, I was actually wondering whether or not I should make myself known to the higher-ups. I don't suppose either of you know if the Captain or the XO are here?" He asked, briefly scanning the crowd over his shoulder.
It might not be the wisest move, deigning to speak with top brass out of uniform. Ensigns, for all intents and purposes, were invisible to captains and the like. Sure, there'd be the odd mess dinner or the overlapping duty shift during which the two might become acquainted--but such interactions would obviously happen at the latter's discretion. It really depended on what kind of commander this Captain Brooks was. No amount of reading into his publicized mission reports could tell Ethan what the guy's personality was like. His instructors at the Academy had merely warned that some captains would be more formal than others, and that was that. Still, a personal introduction might be a good way to stand out a little.
