I have been told, by many members of the service that have come before me, that your first posting is priceless. Priceless opportunity, a priceless memory, that sort of thing. I've just recently arrived at my own--the USS Aquila. As far as first impressions are concerned, I'd say a ship like this is wasted on an officer like me. Still, to find oneself on such a vessel is a privilege, in every sense of the word. That privilege came at a considerable cost, and for that privilege, I have incurred a considerable debt.
It's very easy to feel small out here, and in the grand scheme of things, we are small. Although, I was pretty small at the academy too. I suppose a general feeling of humility was the first thing I felt when I came aboard. That was about the only lesson that came easily to me. Every question posed to me and every answer I gave was its own struggle, and yet, I found it in myself to endure. More importantly, those that are dearest to me found it in themselves to believe I could one day join the people that laid the foundation of everything that we are, and be remembered as one of them.
I miss Earth, even though I'd never been there before all of this. I should very much like to see it again one day. When I shook Captain Martell's hand on Graduation Day, I honestly couldn't remember the last time I'd felt that much contentment. I already miss my mother and father, and my sisters. I miss Easthaven and the valley, of course. I miss my uncle too. I think he'd be proud to see what had become of his efforts. Oh, and I also received a very generous gift from the captain before I left. I plan to write to him soon to thank him properly for that, and everything else he's done for us. On the whole, I am in equal parts relieved and anxious. The real work starts tomorrow. However small I may feel, I shall take up my share of the task and, like the officers of old, bring all honor and knowledge to the Fleet. Here's hoping I measure up to the vision.
