AT/D12 - Science Complex
#34
Sovar followed the auburn haired CSO, going to a section of the Science Complex that he had yet to venture toward. As they continued to their as-yet-unknown, at least to Sovar, destination they passed by several other crew members. Miller was prompt in providing introductions, and all of them seemed genuinely curious or even excited to meet Sovar. There was a sense that he was getting, that science was perhaps a not oft visited department, and he made a mental note of it. Making regular appearances in the complex would be easy, and would offer him some chances to indulge a side of him he’d not worked on since the Vulcan Science Academy.

" I hope you like what you're about to see, Commander", the CSO remarked, and it drew a brow raise from Sovar.

“I trust that your studies will be suitably intriguing to me, Lieutenant Commander Miller.”

Heat and humidity were the things that hit him first, and Sovar couldn’t help but take a deep breath in as he entered the lab. He walked far enough forward that the doorway closed behind them, and really let the warmth sink into his frame. For a brief moment Sovar closed his eyes and focused on breathing in the bask-worthy fresh air.

Miller began to speak of her project and what it was focused on. It caused him to awaken and take in the room for what it was; all about them were different types of agricultural foodstuffs. Varieties that he recognized, then others that he did not. Colours combined with scents, and it was suddenly much more obvious to Sovar why botanists would enjoy the tangible parts of their studies.

" I first started with tomatoes, and it's since grown to include other fruits, vegetables, seeds and grains, and we monitor it all quite closely".

“Impressive.”

While it was only one word, it was high praise. The sheer number of foodstuffs and crops that were on hand were surprising, and Miller was correct in her assumptions. Having crops that were easier to grow in different environments, more durable, and deliver more edible nourishment for better return on resource investment, was incredibly important. Especially to colonies, whether they used replicators or not; biomatter was always required, and energy demands sometimes outstripped supply. The latter part Miller herself had spoken to, as starships did encounter emergency situations where energy was rationed: Voyager herself being a prime example.

“It would seem these are, then, the fruits of your labour,” Sovar began investigating some of the vegetables and fruit.

“Do you test the stability of the cross-pollinated species and their tolerance for adverse conditions and disease? What is your methodology?”

It was then that Sovar recognized a familiar fruit that most Vulcans would find at breakfast.

“Gespar,” he said before moving toward an area dedicated to them.

“An unexpected find in this eclectic nursery of produce. Are there species that you are focusing on, and how do you determine those that you do select? This would generally be considered a delicacy as opposed to a staple. Or is that, perhaps, your intention?”

Sovar stood straight up, realizing he was not even facing Miller anymore, having become engrossed in the medley of variety surrounding him. Turning about to face her, he gave the slightest of bows. Even then, his countenance had loosened significantly in the warmth, and Sovar seemed somehow more at ease.

“Apologies for the number of questions, Lieutenant Commander Miller. I hope my queries do not feel like an interrogation, but instead show my eager inquisitiveness.”
