AT/D12 - Science Complex

There was a distinctive nod that had come from Sovar when he heard Miller speak about the research being a team effort; the words reinforced what he’d already discovered of Miller’s character in the dossiers. She always ensured that those under her command were recognized for their efforts as much as for their discoveries. It was appreciated, he knew, from the many regular positive reviews of her leadership from subordinates. But also in how the officers responded and reacted to her whenever Miller interacted with them.

A brow rose when Miller said that the project was still in its planning stages. From what Sovar could see, it was well beyond planning. However, he could not discount that perhaps the setup of the grow bay and the plants already thriving within was from the group wanting to be hands on first. It wouldn’t be exactly how Sovar would do it, but then he wasn’t a botanist either. That, and his Vulcan side sometimes caused him to be more rigid in his methodologies.

“At a later date, we should discuss your project in more detail. I would be interested to understand the conceptualization that took place, and learn more about motivations. I find it an unorthodox way to proceed with such a project, though the results already seem to speak for themselves.”

Miller was an accommodating officer, and department head. Some would find his questions intrusive, while others still might even go so far as to be offended. Not Miller, who seemed to take his enthusiasm at face value, and welcomed it. It also was apparent, listening to her, that he was correct in a prior assumption that the Science Complex was not oft visited; though he understood the reasoning behind the reality. Sovar knew he would make it a point, for as long as he was First Officer, to make more regular visits.

Hearing that the chosen fruits, vegetables, and grains had been picked through a process of ‘choosing favourites’ caused Sovar’s opposite brow to rise instead of the usual right side. It was another choice that he would not have considered. Instead, he would have done rigorous background research in determining the appropriate staples that would provide the most beneficial outcomes such as nutrition and general edibility. It was a reminder to him to perhaps engage his other half more when committing to scientific endeavours.

“Your decision to use the favourites of your team is, again, unorthodox if novel. It does hold a certain logic that I find fascinating. I might hypothesize that in starting with favourites, you may see acceptance of the crops increase over others that, while more nutritionally suited, would not be as preferable or palatable.”

Apparently, the milaberries were not only a favourite, but were possibly weed-like in their spread. As Miller offered some up, Sovar had to confess.

“While I have heard of milaberries, I will admit that I know little about them. More than that, I have never tried them before.”

Looking directly at Miller, his face still held a stoicness, but his eyes betrayed his underlying curiosity.

“I would try a couple. For science.”
