Reyna answered the door and gave her thumb print for the package. When she brought it over to the sitting area, she mentioned it was from Jason. Opening it, she thought they were very cute. It would help her always remember their day together.
"That wath thweet!" She then frowned in frustration over how hard it was to talk properly with a missing tooth. She talked much slower to try and compensate as she continued, "I barely spoke with him and we don't even know each other, but he got me something as a gift. That was very thoughtful. He was correct. I'm not big on teddy bears, but reminders of emotional milestones are something much closer to my heart these days."
When Beno came back into the room and sat across Alex's lap, Reyna smiled and blushed a tiny bit, but seemed very happy at the site of the two of them together like that. Reyna hoped that she would grow up to be as pretty, even if she wouldn't have spots. Talk shifted back to clay, but also about Beno teaching her socialization as a woman. Reyna was acutely aware that there was much for her to learn. It made her feel very good that Beno was going to help teach her about such things.
"I have to admit that I do have lots of questions. I still want to have that talk with dad, but...um...some of my questions I think I need to talk with just you about. I'm definitely going to need a woman's perspective on, but only if you're comfortable about that sort of thing." She gave Alex a look that left little room for debate, "Dad, don't ask."
Alex gave an amused smile, "Well, mom...I guess it's a good thing you're here to handle such mysterious questions. I will freely admit that I'm not a woman and am unqualified to give the opinions of one, so my dad feelings are not hurt at all. I had no idea there were such secret things. For the record, I did have conversations about very girl related things with my sister, but I suppose that only makes me an honorary member of the girl club."
That made reyna laugh, "Thanks for understanding."
Beno then asked about what they should make and Reyna responded, "Well, as you pointed out, we should start with a simple bowl. Practicing how to work it on the wheel, going for consistency and learning the feel of it, especially as you try to thin it and pull it up into a shape, molding the sides and so on. We can then go from a bowl to a jar or cup that has higher sides. Then we can graduate to something like a vase that narrows again at the top and maybe some designs to work into the sides that give it character and identity. I need to work on proportion and scale. I need to refine my ability to work in fine detail. Eyes and lips are challenging for me, because they have such expressive detail that the tiniest flaw can make them look completely different. One of my flaws is that I need to learn more patience. I get very frustrated when I don't get something right the first time, but I'm told that most people don't get such things right the first time. On the one hand, I know I'm not the same as most people, and that can be a good thing at times. On the other hand, I sometimes want to be more like other people, but finding the balance seems impossible. I've seen that there are people who can make amazing works of art that stir emotions in me to look at them. I want to be able to do that, I just don't know how yet.Part of me feels that if I can't be like everyone else, then I want to be someone that when they seen that I'm different, they think of it as being a good thing and not a bad thing. I want to learn how to hide what scares them while discovering how to bring out what inspires or helps them."
Reyna waved her hand and a hologram appeared in the middle of the floor. The figure was of some kind of carving or sculpture with subdued colors to it, but it was life size and two meters tall. It showed what looked almost like a woman stepping out of a wall. The wall was perfectly smooth, but stepping from it was the figure of an adult woman, perhaps stepping out of a shower, the foot barely touching the ground with the toes and ball of the foot, the heel still raised. The entire leg could be seen until you got to about mid thigh, where the rest of her inner thigh was hidden behind the surface. The details revealed a bare hip and side of her torso, a bare shoulder and arm clearly visible, but the arm was curled delicately and between the placement of the arm and the plane of the surface, it hid the elements that might have made it daring. The side of a breast could be seen, but the placement of the forearm was perfectly maintaining a respectful degree of modesty. In fact, the way it hid and revealed at the same time, there was nothing sexual about it at all, yet it suggested and hinted to the imagination what was just out of view. From any angle you looked, there was nothing inappropriate about it, yet you felt as if you were seeing more than you should. Her head was turned toward the surface, but wasn't hidden. The figure wasn't being shy, but appeared lost in thought about something and you wanted to know what it was she was thinking about. That was when Beno saw it. The spots...she knew those spots. It was her. It showed her spots along one side completely from head to toe, yet hid the rest of her. It was both alluring, yet simple.
Reyna said to them both, as if describing a class project, "I call it Stepping Out. I'm able to render this with the program easily enough, but I've never tried it in any form of sculpture with clay or stone. Those mediums are very unforgiving in their own ways. I figure that clay gives me the ability to fix small mistakes I might make along the way, as I'm clearly still learning. What do you think?"
The expression on her face showed that she expected them to not like it, but was hoping they wouldn't totally hate it. Like any child, she was doubting herself. "It's too much, isn't it."
Alex stared at it in awe, he was speechless, which was a rare moment for him.
