Nodding along as Miller responded to his comments, Sovar was beginning to get a better picture of the Chief Science Officer. It was, in his estimation, a good idea to get to know the crew. Especially the department heads as First Officer. He would be working closely with Calleja, Mayfair, Miller, and Omdor during the mission and having a minimum level of acquaintance with each could be key.

Sovar watched as Miller gathered some of the milaberries. He would have offered to help, but he wasn’t entirely sure what would be the best way to harvest them. Instead, he paid attention to what Miller was doing. Her movements were quick and efficient, and it was obvious that she was in her element with the plants. It also informed him even more of who Miller was.

Show me your garden and I shall tell you what you are, the quote of Alfred Austin jumped into Sovar’s thoughts.

A nurturing provider? Practical and patient? The latter certainly would fit with her Security background.

By that time, she had gathered a good number of berries into a container, and had offered some up to Sovar. He listened as she disclosed a warm memory about her late fiancé and how she became familiar with milaberries. Apparently the berry had many uses, which would increase its utility in his mind. He popped a few of the berries into his mouth as Miller continued to speak.

“I once experimented with making Milaberry ketchup…”

While incredibly small in terms of the size of reaction, it would be clear to anyone that Sovar’s face scrunched up in that moment; a sour look mixed with dismay.

“...which wasn't as horrific as it might sound".

As quickly as it had happened, Sovar managed to correct his stoic demeanour and return to a neutral looking face. Then he managed to swallow.

“The berries are delicious,” he said first.

“However, milaberry ketchup does not sound… appetizing. I will have to take you at your word regarding the palatability of milaberry ketchup.”

Reaching for a few more berries, Sovar’s brow raised and the corner of his mouth turned upward ever so slightly.

“I can be adventurous in finding new gastronomical delights. Something I do not share with some of my kin,” he took in more of the berries, enjoying the delightful flavor and texture.

“These are comforting. Something that feels very much homegrown. A pie would surely be preferable to ketchup.”

Sovar reached into the container and grabbed a handful of the milaberries so that he would not have to continue reaching in.

“Perhaps, Lieutenant Commander, you can tell me more about Artemis and her crew? I am particularly interested in the department heads with whom you serve. I estimate that I may encounter resistance to my presence on this mission, particularly as I am filling in for Commander Coleman.”
