Qi winced — first, at having forgotten Chertstone’s recent promotion. Then, at the coldly professional reply that he received from Qab’ataar. He hadn’t been serious about his comment toward Chertstone. Even if he had been, the pilot’s head was too big for his own good. He needed to learn some humility. Just because he won the Wairara’s race didn’t mean that he could strut around the ship like he was the long lost descendant of Zefram Cochrane?
An uncomfortable thought wrapped itself around his mind.

It wasn’t fair. Nobody could have flown the ship better than Chertstone had. Mika’s death wasn’t his fault. In fact, if it weren’t for his flying, many more people would have died. Qi felt the anger dissipate, like exhaling a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.
“It’s actually been a smooth trip so far. He seems to have a handle on it,” he replied, a bit sheepishly. “Anyway, I saw you querying the probe complement. Are you thinking about launching one to monitor the Yeager? I had a similar idea using the external sensor array. Combined with your probe, we should have a perfect view of what we look like from an outside perspective.”
