There was no clear reason why Braggins had ordered the support ship along. It was well within her rights to do so as a senior officer.

The Yeager had an ample supply of Probes aboard, including several Class-Is. They could, theoretically, be employed as a towed passive sensor array, but doing so would require them to broadcast their results to the Yeager and thus reveal their positions. They were also not nearly as effective as the Yeager's own passive sensors.
Rather than using the probes as a towed array, a more efficient use would be to launch a spread of probes to create a "net" of passive sensors.

While the Yeager lay silent, the passive sensors detected a massive energy surge at the edge of the system. While initial emissions took several minutes to resolve, and remained unconfirmed due to lack of up-to-date intelligence on the latest Cardassian designs, it was a small squadron of vessels. At least three in the cruiser category.
One set of emissions did, however, immediately trigger an alert as the sensors and computer logs compared results. The lead ship in the squadron was, quite definitively, the Os'rusa.
