There was the faintest touch of a grimace on Mara's face as she entered the lounge. She'd put herself through another punishing gym session and her muscles were burning even after the lengthy warm-down session. Her gym clothes were baggy and black, a hoodie and long heavy shorts with high-top sneakers. She'd tied her chestnut hair back, the short but messy ponytail hanging over her left shoulder and exposing the bare skin of her right side-shave.
I hate leg day. I fuckin' hate it. It would take a while for the soreness to fade. Calleja's Amazonian physique took plenty of effort to maintain but she was well used to the struggle.
She went to the replicator and punched in the code for an isotonic drink. When the huge glass appeared she chugged the whole thing in one and dropped the empty glass back in for dereplication, before heading over to the counter.
"Hey Chief. What can I get you?" The man in the purple uniform nodded in recognition. Mara's routine was pretty consistent. Hammer the gym, pint of isotonic to hydrate, then a big protein and calorie laden meal to replenish her strength.
"Griff." The Security Chief nodded to the staff member. "I'm feelin' burritos. Extra heat an' extra cheese. Hook me up? An' I'll take..."
"Our biggest caramel macchiato? Already set to go." Griff handed the tall mug over with a grin. "Food coming right up. Take a seat, I'll bring them over." The Support crewman turned and busied himself with the order as Mara took the drink with a nod of thanks and went to find somewhere to sit down.
Dark eyes roved across the room before falling on the group that were in full flow. For a moment Calleja stood, unsure of whether or not to go over, and took a sip of coffee. There was always the question about whether her rank and vaunted position would make things awkward, as they seemed to be having an animated discussion. But the Security Chief had never been and would never be the kind of officer who would hold her rank over anyone.
Fuck it. If I feel like I'm bringin' the mood down, I'll fuck off. Social cues ain't my strong point but I can usually tell pretty quick if somethin' is wrong.
She wandered over, standing just behind Svenson and catching the last few lines of conversation.
"Hey," she said in greeting. "Ju. Been a while," she added with a nod to the Engineer. "Hally. Glad you're still with us, an' we didn't break you last time out," she teased with a grin. The Bandaran didn't know the science officer very well, but she nodded to Lucy before turning her attention to Ardanna. "An' hey. I've seen Ardanna nearly start a fire with a coffee machine. So if she's gonna start cookin', make sure the evac protocol is updated, yeah?"
Calleja winked at Svenson with a wicked grin on her lips as she pulled a chair over.
"I remember cookin'. I don't miss it. Replicators do that shit so much better than I ever did," Mara said as she sat down and leant back, as informal as ever.
