Mara admitted to having gone home to visit her family during break. A lot had changed there but not enough progress was being made and true Mara fashion, she had told them as much. Ju wasn’t shocked that Mara felt she would not be welcome back at home for a little while until everyone calmed down from whatever hackles had been raised during her visit. Ju understood how going home and seeing changes, and even the lack thereof, could affect you. There was something hard about knowing you had been gone for some time and that things had changed in their own way while you were gone. Sometimes, it was hard to see progress but it was also just as hard to see things stagnate.
“Well maybe next leave we’ll do something together then,” Ju said nudging her best friend with her elbow and a bright smile on her face.
This leave had been one of healing and it was greatly needed. Ju was grateful she had gone home, seen her Halmoni’s grave, visited her brothers and their families, and just immersed herself in an environment that helped her recenter herself.
Lucy began talking about various rocks, which completely lost Ju. She enjoyed plants and she enjoyed engineering but she was not a big geology person. She didn’t really get those kinds of things, she knew more about metal than she did about rocks and things that were natural. “Maybe while the botanists and geologists are getting excited over biological growth and creation, the civilization on this hypothetical planet will need something fixed that only us engineers can do. Then, those poor defenseless people will need the loud and rowdy security officers to protect them while they’re exploring and fixing things.”
Ju knew that Mara did not do well standing around watching stuff. She was someone that needed to go out, get things done, and have a healthy hand in it. Mara would never be the sort that could sit behind a desk and let other people run around. She was as hands on as she could be, and sometimes too hands on. But, for Ju, she had been the saving grace she needed when her world fell apart some time ago.
“How did you get into geology, Lucy?” Ju asked curiously refilling her glass with soju and taking a sip. The bottle was getting light which meant she was going to have to decide if she wanted to get another or call it for the night so she would be fresh when her first shift started.
