Lucy smiled when Ju asked about how she’d got into geology. It was pretty straightforward-ish. Kids her age back then had varying interests, but her parents wanted to make sure she got to experience the nature around her. There was something about the smell of pine sap or lichen. Finding stones and other stuff was cool.
“Shiny stones. My parents would take me and my kid sister for walks in the local forests. Would explore and found stones I really liked near the rivers. Mom encouraged me to learn about the stones I’d bring back. Stuff took and my interests expanded from that they were shiny to crystal formation, texture, and density.
“Also got to do a bit of beach combing. It was pretty cool the stuff that the sea would drop on the shore. Very smoothed down, but mostly recognisable.”
It had taken her down the rabbit hole of the Mohs scale, how things like metals or gems formed, and space. She was hooked when her parents took her stargazing. Some stuff came to Earth and some was formed by planetary forces. She’d taken to most stuff, though she had her limitations and her strengths. Using them to expand her understanding and know when something was beyond her.
She wanted to see what was out there. To see what was at the other end of that point of light. Everybody brought something to the crew. It would be pretty boring if everyone had the same interests. It was also getting to know each other. Engineers kept the ship running and the Artemis was special. Ju’s surmise was pretty good. Each did get a little lost in their own worlds, but when you brought it together.
Mechanical aptitude was something that Lucy needed to work on. There was stuff that happened that was certainly beyond her. With her curiosity stirred she wanted to get to know her colleagues. It was kinda easier in a small group, but knowing how to express her curiosity was complicated.
